Tech: An Easy-to-Use Photo Editing Program

An Easy-to-Use Photo Editing Program

When you need to do some simple image editing, instead of opening up a big bulky program, try opening the image in IrfanView . IrfanView is an image viewer and editor that has your usual basic editing functions, such as:
  • cut, copy, paste
  • crop
  • rotate
  • resize/resample
  • convert
  • brightness & contrast
Use it to jazz up your listings. You can fix some of the picture defects with the stamp tool; add some text with the text tool, and some simple effects, such as:
  • blur
  • emboss
  • sharpen
  • sepia
  • oil paint
While it may not take the place of programs such as Adobe Photoshop, it is user-friendly, fast and easy to use, and best of all, it's free!

Real Estate Loans: First Time Home Buyers Tax Credit

Congress is considering extending the $8,000 tax credit to first time home-buyers (those that have not owned a home in the last 3 years), which is scheduled to expire November 30, 2009. At least 20% of the homes sold nationwide were a direct cause of the buyers getting this tax credit. If Congress does not extend the credit, it will be crippling for housing and the economy.

Some members of Congress are pushing to expand the credit from $8,000 to $15,000, and lift the income restrictions that are currently in place. Currently the first-time homebuyer credit is available in full to those buying their primary residences that make $75,000 or less ($150,000 for those who file jointly). A partial credit is available to those making between $75,000 and $95,000 ($150,000 to $170,000 for joint filers).

Foreclosures are still on the rise and so is unemployment. To stabilize the economy, we need to keep the housing market strong and steady. Real estate led us into this recession and will be a major factor in pulling us out. Job growth is always the last sector to recover, and it will come in time. Momentum is the key here. Real estate growth, small business growth, lower taxes and overhead will lead the way. As businesses grow, they will need more employees to staff their companies, and we will get America back to work and on the road to prosperity.

We Know You've Heard This Before - Back Up!

True story - The GRI website was compromised by some intruders last week. The attack originated from Russia. No information was stolen, but the intruder changed some lines of code which affected our website. (Note: No student information is stored on our website server.)

We quickly took our site down and were able to restore our website from our backup in no time. We are fanatical about our backups! Nightly, we back up 3 different ways in case one fails. We back up to tape, to a 4 Terabyte external hard drive and we have a subscription to back up online as well.

I know what you are saying, GRI is taking this too far. Maybe we are. But ask yourself, how difficult would it be to conduct business if you lost all your contact information? What if you lost an important contract or marketing materials?

Loss of data does not only occur because of a virus or a hacker. It can happen due to various others:
- Hard drive failure
- Accidental deletion
- Hardware (think laptop) is lost or stolen
- Hardware loss due to flood or fire

You may not need 3 methods of backing up, but just in case, do yourself a favor and start backing up your important data today.
